There is an expansion in the public space of anti-Semitic, negationist messages and attitudes (report)

Anti-Semitic, denialist messages and attitudes or attitudes promoting the cult of people convicted of war crimes or of important leaders of the Legionary Movement have spread in the public space between May 2025 and April 2026, reveals an annual anti-Semitism monitoring report released on Monday by the National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania Elie Wiesel.

The report responds to the objectives of the National Strategy for Preventing and Combating Anti-Semitism, Xenophobia, Radicalisation and Hate Speech 2024-2027.

According to the document, especially online, on social media and video platforms, classic anti-Semitic narratives and conspiracy theories adapted to different local or global contexts have circulated, amplified by accounts with tens or hundreds of thousands of followers.

At the same time, the reaction of public authorities is more visible, both in terms of interventions on online content, as well as in investigations and the completion of judicial investigations, although it is difficult to assess the real impact in terms of combating these phenomena.

The report underlines that it appears as a reasonable hypothesis that the unrestrained rollover in the virtual space of such messages contributes to the population's negative perception of the recent history of the Jews in Romania, as well as to the dynamics of the relations between the ethnic majority and today's Jews.

An opinion poll conducted by Social Monitor for the Elie Wiesel Institute between November 1-15, 2025, on a sample of 1,004 people, cited in the report, revealed some worrying trends regarding the perception of the majority-ethnic minority relationship, the image of Ion Antonescu or the knowledge of the history of the Holocaust.
